The Fairview Finder™

I designed the original Fairview Finder using spare packing materials in my garage. It started out as a personal tool I always wanted to help me frame and compose my paintings. I also needed help remembering all those composition types Edgar Payne talked about in his book, “Composition for Outdoor Painting.” After field-testing hand-cut prototypes in various workshops, including an extensive painting expedition in France last fall, the responses was overwhelmingly positive. Artists found it incredibly helpful for identifying potential paintings quickly.

The final design and product includes Laser-cut windows and Edgar Payne's 16 composition types, reminding users to focus on solid shapes for an effective design strategy. Additionally, it features 6 Grounded Value motifs, encouraging artists to simplify their background, middle ground, and foreground values into distinct shapes.
