The Fairview Finder™
The Fairview Finder began as a humble idea in my garage, crafted from spare packing materials to create the tool I’d always wanted—something to help me frame and compose my paintings with ease. Inspired by Edgar Payne’s Composition for Outdoor Painting, I also needed a way to keep his 16 composition types top of mind.
After field-testing hand-cut prototypes in workshops and during an extensive painting expedition in France last fall, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Artists found it invaluable for quickly identifying potential compositions and improving their design process.
The final product includes laser-cut windows and Edgar Payne’s 16 composition types, designed to guide users toward focusing on solid shapes for effective design strategies. It also features 6 grounded value motifs, simplifying background, middle ground, and foreground into distinct shapes to enhance depth and clarity.
